What is the Flu?
Influenza is more commonly called the flu, is an acute viral infection in the upper respiratory tract. The difference between the common cold, and the flu are that a cold is usually restricted to the chest, neck and head, and come on slow. While the flu on the other hand strikes fast, and causes symptoms all over the body.
Who Gets the Flu?
There are three classifications for the influenza virus, A, B, and C. A, is the most common virus, which usually occurs in the late fall r early winter. School children account for the highest population who get the flu. This is because of the highly contaminated areas at school which the children come in contact with.
What are the Symptoms of the Flu?
Symptoms of the flu usually appear within forty eight hours after exposure to the virus. The most common symptoms are; sore throat, dry cough, fever, muscle, and joint aches, fatigue, and weakness. Less common symptoms are; sneezing, runny nose, insomnia, swollen glands in the neck, and depression.
What are the Root Causes of the Flu?
If your immune system is taxed you are more likely to get the flu. This would be caused by a number of factor such as; stress, a poor diet, lack of sleep, or another illness. Contact with the influenza virus is the cause of the flu.
Even if you have lost your appetite, you want to do your best to keep eating. It is a good idea to stick to soups, and give your body a break from digestion. Eat as much fruit, and vegetables as possible.
Increase your consumption of garlic, ginger, and onions. Sip on hot water with lemon, cinnamon, and honey. Avoid sugary, refined products, as these foods tax your immune system for hours after you consume them.
If you are just starting to feel some symptoms of the flu coming on start the remedies below as soon as possible, and you may be able to divert the virus from manifesting into the full blown flu. I have done it many times myself, and it works.
|Lomatium Dissectum– Take 2 to 4 ml in liquid form four times a day. Lomatium is known for it’s strong anti-viral effects. It has been used for centuries as an herbal remedy for the flu.|
|Reishi Mushroom – Take as directed. Reishi mushroom boosts your immune system and also is an adaptogen, which will give you a much needed boost of energy.|
|Echinacea and Goldenseal Combination– Take 400 mg in a capsule form four times a day. Both of these herbs increase immune function, and Echinacea has potent anti-viral properties.|
|Vitamin C– Take 1,000 to 2,000 mg three to four times a day. Reduce this dosage if diarrhea occurs. Vitamin C is great for supporting the immune system.|
|Oregano Oil – Take this in a capsule form, as it doesn’t take very good. Take 500 mg four times a day, or as directed on the label. Oregano has incredible anti-viral properties.|
|Ginger– Take 500 mg four times a day. Ginger will help with a sore throat, and also a fever.|
|Traditional Medicinals “Throat Coat Tea”– Brew as directed, and leave your tea-bag in the cup as long as possible. This tea is excellent for soothing a sore throat. I usually just leave mine in, this allows the herbs to steep really well. Sip this tea as needed. It is the best sore throat remedy I have found, and is used quite often by professional singers. Throat coat contains licorice and slippery elm which coat the throat and soothe inflammation. This tea is very sweet tasting.|
